Early Intervention Matters: Early diagnosis and intervention β€” ideally before age 5 β€” significantly improves communication, social, and adaptive outcomes for children with autism. If you notice signs, seek an evaluation promptly rather than adopting a 'wait and see' approach.

Recognise the Signs

Signs & Symptoms of
Autism Spectrum Disorder

Recognising these signs early can make a significant difference. If your child shows several of these, seek a professional evaluation promptly.

Limited eye contact

Reduced or inconsistent eye contact with caregivers and others, even during meaningful interactions.

Delayed or absent speech

Not babbling by 12 months, no single words by 16 months, or loss of previously acquired language skills.

Limited social interest

Reduced interest in other children, difficulty sharing enjoyment, or preferring to play alone.

Repetitive behaviours

Hand flapping, rocking, spinning objects, or insistence on specific routines. Distress when routines change.

Unusual sensory responses

Over- or under-sensitivity to sounds, textures, lights, or smells that may cause distress or fascination.

Difficulty with pretend play

Limited or absent imaginative or pretend play compared to same-age peers.

Understanding the Condition

Causes & Contributing Factors

Understanding why Autism Spectrum Disorder occurs helps families navigate the journey with clarity and confidence.

Genetic Factors

ASD is highly heritable. Hundreds of genes have been associated with autism, though no single gene causes ASD in most cases.

Brain Development Differences

Differences in how neural connections form and prune during early brain development contribute to the distinct profile seen in ASD.

Environmental Influences

Advanced parental age, prenatal exposure to certain medications, and complications during birth have been associated with increased risk.

Immune and Metabolic Factors

Research suggests that immune system dysregulation and metabolic differences may play a role in some cases of autism.

Co-occurring Conditions

ADHD, intellectual disability, epilepsy, anxiety, and sensory processing differences frequently co-occur with ASD, shaping the overall profile.

The term Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is now used to describe the full range of autism presentations, from individuals who are non-speaking with significant support needs to highly verbal individuals with subtler social differences. Earlier terms like Asperger Syndrome and PDD-NOS are now included under the ASD umbrella.

Autism is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition, not a disease to be cured. However, with appropriate, early therapy, many individuals with autism develop significant skills and lead fulfilling, independent lives. Our goal is to maximise each child's potential and quality of life.

Research supports 20–40 hours per week of structured intervention for young children with ASD. We offer flexible intensity levels tailored to your child's needs and your family's capacity, including both centre-based and home-based components.

Evidence-based approaches include ABA therapy, speech-language therapy, occupational therapy, and social skills training. The most effective programmes are individualised, intensive, and involve consistent family participation.
