Auditory Verbal Therapy
in Lucknow

Auditory Verbal Therapy (AVT) is a specialised, evidence-based approach that teaches children with hearing loss to listen and develop spoken language using their residual hearing β€” amplified through hearing aids or cochlear implants. The goal is for children with hearing loss to reach their full potential in mainstream schools and society, communicating through listening and spoken language.

How It Works

Our Auditory Verbal Therapy Approach

A structured, compassionate process from first assessment to lasting results.

Step 01

Auditory & Communication Assessment

Comprehensive evaluation of the child's current listening skills, speech and language development, hearing technology use, and family communication environment.

Step 02

Hearing Technology Optimisation

Working alongside the audiologist to ensure hearing aids or cochlear implants are optimally fitted and consistently worn β€” the essential foundation for all auditory learning.

Step 03

Auditory Skill Hierarchy

Systematically developing listening skills from sound detection through to understanding connected speech in quiet and noise, using targeted, age-appropriate activities.

Step 04

Spoken Language Development

Building vocabulary, grammar, narrative, and verbal expression through an auditory-first approach β€” using hearing as the primary channel for language learning.

Step 05

Parent Coaching as the Core Model

Parents are coached in every session to become their child's primary listening and language facilitators β€” embedding AVT strategies into play, routines, and daily life throughout the week.

Step 06

Progress Monitoring & School Planning

Regular assessment of listening and spoken language development against hearing peers, with active transition planning and school consultation to support mainstream placement.

The earlier the better β€” ideally within the first few months of life following identification through newborn hearing screening. Research consistently shows that children who begin AVT before 6 months of age, with appropriate hearing technology, have the best chance of developing spoken language on par with hearing peers. However, AVT is beneficial at any age after identification.

No. AVT is appropriate for any child using hearing technology β€” whether hearing aids, bone-anchored hearing aids, or cochlear implants. The approach is about maximising the use of whatever residual or amplified hearing the child has. Your audiologist and AVT practitioner work closely together to ensure hearing technology is optimised for listening.

AVT sessions typically occur once or twice a week, but children are awake and learning for many hours every day. Parents are coached to be their child's primary listening and language teachers β€” embedding AVT techniques into bath time, mealtimes, play, and outings. This is what drives rapid progress. The therapist teaches the parent; the parent teaches the child.

AVT is the most appropriate approach for families who want their child to develop listening and spoken language as their primary mode of communication. It requires consistent hearing technology use and high parent involvement. For some families, a total communication or sign-supported approach may be more appropriate. We discuss all options openly so families can make an informed choice.
