Down Syndrome
Treatment in Lucknow

Every child deserves to reach their fullest potential

Down Syndrome is a genetic condition caused by the presence of an extra copy of chromosome 21. It is associated with characteristic physical features, intellectual disability, and speech-language delays. Early, comprehensive therapy helps children with Down Syndrome develop communication, motor, and social skills far beyond what was once thought possible.

Early Intervention Matters: Intervention as early as the first few months of life β€” including feeding support, oral-motor work, and stimulation β€” makes a significant difference in the developmental trajectory of children with Down Syndrome. Do not wait for school age to begin therapy.

Recognise the Signs

Signs & Symptoms of
Down Syndrome

Recognising these signs early can make a significant difference. If your child shows several of these, seek a professional evaluation promptly.

Low muscle tone (hypotonia)

Reduced muscle tone throughout the body, affecting motor development, feeding, and speech production.

Delayed speech and language

Expressive language is typically more delayed than receptive language. Many children with DS use signing before spoken words.

Feeding difficulties in infancy

Difficulty with sucking, latching, and transitioning to solids due to oral-motor hypotonia.

Delayed gross and fine motor milestones

Sitting, standing, walking, and using hands for fine tasks occur later than in typically developing peers.

Intellectual disability

Ranging from mild to moderate, affecting learning, memory, and adaptive behaviour to varying degrees.

Hearing loss

Up to 75% of children with Down Syndrome have some degree of hearing loss, which significantly impacts speech development.

Understanding the Condition

Causes & Contributing Factors

Understanding why Down Syndrome occurs helps families navigate the journey with clarity and confidence.

Trisomy 21

The most common form (95% of cases) β€” an extra copy of chromosome 21 is present in every cell, caused by an error in cell division during development of the egg or sperm.

Translocation Down Syndrome

Part of chromosome 21 attaches to another chromosome. This form can be inherited and accounts for about 4% of cases.

Mosaic Down Syndrome

Only some cells have an extra chromosome 21. This form is rarer and often associated with milder features.

Maternal Age

The risk of Down Syndrome increases with maternal age, particularly from age 35 onwards.

Therapy should begin in the first months of life β€” starting with feeding support and oral-motor work, and expanding to include speech, OT, and physiotherapy as the child develops. Early intervention in the first 3 years produces the greatest developmental gains.

The majority of children with Down Syndrome develop functional spoken language, though speech clarity varies. Many children benefit from using signing (Makaton) alongside speech as an early communication bridge. Our speech therapists work to maximise each child's communication in whatever modality is most effective.

Many children with Down Syndrome attend mainstream school with appropriate support. Others thrive in specialist settings. We work with families and schools to determine the most appropriate educational environment for each child and provide the necessary reports and recommendations.
